this is a must read. i was appalled to learn this....i know what it feels like to lose one's home; I lost my "home" earlier this year and also once before a few years ago...it is horrific, however, made me stronger.......they are lucky they have friends that care....my support, prayers and best wishes are with all of you...

Support Donna Shilling and Rick's return to Curve Lake First Nation

Description: Donna Shilling is a First Nations woman. Her mother was from Rama First Nation, and her father, Grant Taylor from Curve Lake. He fought in the War... for Freedom..... and to Protect peoples rights.
Donna met Rick, a non-native man, they fell in love and lived for a long time at Curve Lake First Nation in a common-law relationship.
After six years, Rick built a business on the reserve- owned a store and gas station on the reserve and hired many people who were members of Curve Lake.
He gave to his community. Donna gave to her community. They have many relatives living on the reserve.
Rick made a mistake. Charged and convicted of possession/purpose of Marijuana and a
device from a Traveling Salesman they have deemed a weapon...a Baton.
Then 5 days later they received a notice from Chief and Council to get out in 12 hours.
They had time only to pack a few things and leave with a Suitcase.
This was a conviction of a crime of non violence nature.
Curve Lake Chief and Council do not evict members of their community who are convicted of crimes of violence such as assault, murder, rape, or drunk driving.
Rick and Donna were evicted because Rick is a non native man.
Where in our Traditional Teachings are we taught to treat non-native people any differently than we do our own people?
Our ultimate Chief and Council is Creator and our Ancestors. Would they have come to the same conclusion or would they have attended court in support, testifying on Rick's behalf and then asking Rick and Donna how they could help? I suspect they would. At least MY Creator and Ancestors would.

Just some things to point out..
1) I don't believe you Just HIRE a Human Rights Champion like Mr. Clayton Ruby. Mr. Ruby would i am sure would let you know if he will take your case...he has represented...David Millgard, Donald Marshall, Guy Paul Morin and Dion Quintuplets who were certainly exploited.Got a Public Appology from Premier (get those fucking Indians out of the park) Mike Harris..on behalf of the remaining quints.
2) Everyone has a past...as does Some involved from the "Chief and Council"..those who have cast their votes are also apparently at one time or another "undesirable" from Pot Smokers, Drunk Driving, Bootlegging and selling Pharmaceutical drugs..Even the Police involved were involved in ASSULT charges were laid on THEIR PARTNERS!!....we are still following up the rumors and there appears to be alot of truth surfacing..should be interesting....a few of the Council members have come to Donna in Shame and told her how sorry they are. Little comfort now..3) as for the Peterborough Examiner..Little was printed of what Donna had to say..especially when she was asked to comment on a comment of the Chief who stated "We are not apart of Canada"....Andrea Houston Peterborough Reporter, was curious what he mean't...so are we. Donna's father fought in the Canadian Army, She has a Canadian Drivers lisc. and as Donna said..The Reserve accepts Federal Funding..so i guess that makes us apart of Canada4) You don't know how this has affected Donna and Rick ...as the 2nd day they were at my home...Donna suffered i believe a nervous breakdown while driving..i had to guide her off the highway by cell phone conversation...i had to call 911 and have an Ambulance on standby until Rick and Mel when to get her..she came home an i gave her a Therapeutic Touch treatment...and she slept for hours...she was so shaken by this she was afraid to drive again for days....i had to go with her...I cannot tell you what it must be like to have your own People destroy a part of your Soul.5) Where does the Chief and Council...draw the LINE... as there is Living in Curve Lake, Rapist, Pedophile, Murderer, Hard Drug Dealers and Pot Dealers...Bootleggers..Drunk Driver charges.Assult Convicts....all seem to be o.k. as they still there...? Lastly...why are First Nations People being told WHO they can Love -WHERE they can or cannot live...WHY is this happening? Are First Nation People to ask now on the First Date...DO YOU HAVE YOUR CPIC...as if we fall in love...you may have to leave....seeing it seems...you don't belong... I GUESS ALL MEN ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL to the Chief and Council in Curve Lake... I have never seen more people in FEAR and AFRAID to speak out... shhh be quiet ... and don't say a word.... THAT IS JUST WHAT THEY WANT... all the SECRET CLOSED MEETINGS? I THOUGHT A COUNCIL represented the PEOPLE..how come then Donna and Rick NEVER GOT TO SPEAK? They were treated like Mushrooms... an old saying ..."let those without sin cast the first stone...." or Life is a Boomerang...what you put out comes back.. stay tuned...we learn from our Mistakes...that could be how the People of Curve Lake VOTED...June 2008 is coming.

I cannot believe this story and how it is playing out!! I just recently requested an application for housing in Curvelake because it is important to me to come home and spend time with my family, family like Donna that I was very close to when I was a child and family that I have never met. I want them to know me and get to know my family. My fiance is non-native and after reading this story is a bit apprehensive about moving there!! This needs to come to an end, we are native and we have rights, having our husbands kicked off our land is not right, we are legally bound to love and honour them for the rest of our lives. They belong with us on our land!!!
I was asked to post this comment from a friend who summed this up in two words...DOMESTIC TERRORISM.....anyone in a Mixed relationship on a Reserve in Canada could be faced with this...to UNDERMINE your Rights to freely Love someone...of another Race, Color or Creed. Upon Death of a First Nations Spouse it has been happening where the living spouse non member is being asked to leave. No HUMAN RIGHTS AND FREEDOM ON RESERVES = REPRESSION.
